The TOP PICK of Christmas is……

DSC_0263

Our final pick of Chrismas is our favorite house of all time!  My good friend has a daughter that wants a dollhosue for Christams   After searching for one she decided to make her own.  What started out as a simple project turned into a labor of love.  From the cedar shakes, to the shutters, clapboard and stone foundation, it was the most beautiful and important bulld of all time. It took hours, days and months of meticulous and painstaking planning, cutting, gluing etc.  She put different paneling in the rooms, used an assortment of wallpaper and rugs (cut from remnants of fabric she had) and even used pieces to make into lamps or accessories.

house tour 015

Today is the last day of The Showcase with two more quality and appealing pieces to blog about. In the photo above, you will notice a Stark sisal rug as well as a Schumacher-covered swivel chair, a lovely shade of green with pink accents and piping. The rug is 12′ by 15′.8″ and is selling for $1,000; a nice size at a nice price. The chair has a mate, which is not pictured, and each is selling for $200, a great price. The dimensions are 31″ W, 32″ D, and 33″ H. To everyone who has followed The Showcase, you’ll also see the Lee Jofa love seat, which was featured yesterday, and the pair of Pembroke side tables featured Tuesday.  We all love instant gratification even if we won’t admit it, and here’s an easy and economical way to do it.  Go for the room on the 2006 YWCA Holiday Tour!  It’s a festive classic, sure to make 2013 and future holidays, wonderful.

Flower Power

Thursday, December 20, 2012

Comfy, cozy, and classic is the best way to describe the feature of the day. Need a way to revitalize and brighten a tired room, then consider this perfectly-sized love seat, beautifully covered in Lee Jofa chintz. I’m crazy about the radiant flowers, and the braided trim finishes the bottom cleanly. The dimensions are 32″ height, 74″ length, and 39″ width. Doesn’t this make you want to curl-up on it with a good book and cup of tea, especially on a dreary day, surrounding yourself with flower power? Rejuvenate! Check in tomorrow, and you can see this piece again, set in a gracious living room along with the Stark sisal rug and Schumacher-covered swivel chairs I’ll be blogging about. Stay tuned!

French Charming

Day Three of The Showcase and another lovely antique to ponder. We move from the English to the French with this charming occasional table, comprised of buhl Walnut, Rosewood, and brass.  “Buhl” or “Boulle” is a type of inlay and marquetry method perfected by Andre Charles Boulle, the official cabinet maker to Louis XIV. The dark spot you see on the bottom shelf is the delicate pattern. This is truly a special piece and would be perfect for a bare corner, just waiting for some warmth and sophistication.

To Pembroke We Go!

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

I have always loved Pembroke tables, named after the Countess of Pembroke (1737-1831), who was the first to order such a piece. The two presented on The Showcase today are handsome examples of these timeless essentials. When opened, the hinged leaves become oval to a span of 36″ wide and 28″ long. Crossbanding on the top and drawers as well as fillet boxwood inlays on the legs are classic features of the functional and elegant pair. Brass shoes and casters complete the tables with stability and beauty. The condition of both are good and the dimensions are 27.5″ height, 28″ depth, and 20″ length. Since the pieces can be used together or independently, they’re a wise and aesthetic investment in antique collecting and interior design.  4FD61B29-1D02-491E-AE67-16D71CA1A6E4

A Feathered Treasure

Monday, December 17, 2012

The first striking piece in The Showcase is a show stopper, and if you saw the opening blog yesterday, you got an early shot of it. This antique, crotch mahogany linen press is stately and graceful with matched veneers, dove-tailed drawers, and ratcheted shelf rests. For those wishing to use it as an entertainment center, the top shelf has been nicely adapted for TV storage and more. Not only is the cabinet very clean-finished, but in very good condition. The dimensions are 6’10” height, 26.5″ depth, and 42″ length. Modestly priced at $2,500 this exceptional antique should be on everyone’s wish list. Whether you are looking for a singular stunner in a living room, family room, bedroom or hallway, this is the one to seriously consider.

Our hearts are broken after the events on Friday in Newtown, a wonderful community much like our own. We blog about homes with great architecture and beautiful interiors but today we wish for nothing more than the homes in Newtown  to be a haven for comfort and healing. Because architecture and interiors are nothing without love and community. We know life goes on but we do so with heavy hearts.

The 6th PICK of Christmas

Sunday, December 16, 2012

23 Oakshade is our 6th PICK!

Think hydrangeas or Meadow Rue along this fence. This property has many opportunities for a garden and borders.

23 Oakshade is a divine spot situated well on a wonderful street.  It has 3 bedroom/2 bathrooms, 1931 square feet on .34  acres. You open the front door to an open floor plan with a living room and dining room.  A sunroom and den (or 4th bedroom) in addition to a third bedroom round out the first floor. Offered at $949,000, this home (and neighborhood) is a winner! Listed by Bernadette Fisher at Kelly Associates.

Lovely original details such as he built-in bookshelves and the mantle, add a lot of charm.

Many opportunities to create your garden!

We are halfway through our 12 picks….six more fabulous opportunities to come for under the tree.  There is still a little time! Jingle Jingle…

10 Tory Hole Road should be on your radar if you are out looking this Spring for something special.  It is beautifully renovated, and expanded in the most discreet way. This house is the perfect opportunity for someone who wants the best of both worlds: room for kids, dogs and “stuff ” as well as a “grown up” and gracious lifestyle.  No detail is overlooked!  Situated in a private and well sought after neighborhood of Delafield Island, the 1930’s house has  5 bedrooms/4 1/2 baths, slate roof (which we love) approximately 5200 square feet, and is offered at $2,950,000.  Listed by Kate Balanoff and at Kelly Associates.

Elegant, and beautifully established foundation plantings.

The rear view shows off a beautiful place to entertain.

Great scale and, of course, we noted the front door (love it!) Another example of an entry that is its own room.  Always a “good thing”!

The house is gracious yet comfortable. Easy to entertain in. This room is large enough for several seating areas and corners for conversation.

My favorite room – the sunroom.

Comfortable and easy. Beautifully done.

A well planned kitchen in warm tones blend beautifully with the rest of the house.

Family room filled with southern charm.

Doors in the family room lead out to terraces.

The 2nd PICK for Christmas

Thursday, December 6, 2012

66 Bridle Trail is simply wonderful. We have blogged about this house before and we still love it.  Tucked away in northern Darien, it is so private and the property is so pretty. You won’t get to keep what they have, but oh… the possibilities are endless for beautiful decorating when the bones are good.  It remains one of the very few with both a pool and a tennis court which makes it feel like a back country estate. (But is not pretentious!) 5 bedrooms/4 1/2 baths, 5000+ square feet.  2.06 acres. Asking $3,495,000.  Listed by Cathy Lawton at Kelly Associates.

NOTHING like a large square entry. Love it when it feels like its own room.

All beautiful archways lead to more beautiful rooms.

Magnificent windows.

A real kitchen. for all to gather in.

The way out… to your very own compound.

This where everyone will want to hang. And its gorgeous.

Note the little projector. Everyone needs their own screening room.

The study.

The landing. Yes, it is really nice to have one.

Here it goes. The gardens and grounds are fabulous.

more to see…

more to see…more to love.

Tennis. Wimbledon style!

Where you will host with Long Island Iced teas.

The (tennis) judge’s view.

Even the gardening shed is good.

Yes, I know there are a lot of pictures but this is one of those houses you can’t get enough of.  These would be a fabulous set of keys for under the tree!
