Sunday, February 1, 2015As we sit in the aftermath of what was not the”Blizzard of the Century”, but in the freezing cold, there is every indication that the Spring market is upon us. Buyers are out and about. It’s “house hunting season” again and nothing speaks louder to me than that quote from Miles Redd! When you are out looking at properties remember that getting what you really want can happen. Whether you are buying something that is move-in ready, or you are looking for a project, everyone’s “best house” is out there. You just need to take that leap!
Safe to say I would get a good cry in over this and live there happily ever after.
11 Huckleberry Lane, offered by Kate Balanoff through Houlihan Lawrence, is a classic and gracious colonial with six bedrooms, five full and two half baths generously spread out inside 7200 square feet. Newly built in 2003, it has settled into its own and holds up its end of the bargain as a “classic”. Bring your kleenex; who knows, maybe you will get a good weep in! Asking $3,395,000.

Everyone needs to own a really good hall lantern at some point in their lives. And here would be your opportunity. I would suggest looking at what Robert Kime has right now. I think Miles would agree.

And how he would work the upstairs hallway! Another good example of Miles’ talent. Coincidentally, this house is on the market through Houlihan Lawrence! This house would be a fabulous weekend retreat.
The dining room at 11 Huckleberry has enough wall space to wrap some fabulous “high impact” wall paper around it. To say nothing of the dining room table and chairs you will be shopping for. Dinner for 18.
This is the BIG KITCHEN you are leaving the City for! Fabulous, done and that is one gorgeous wood countertop on the island.
Make no mistake, this den at the other end of the kitchen is where everyone will wind up at the end of the day. Very comfortable. Check out some of Robert Kime’s Ikat for this room as well.
One of the chicest “teen” hang outs we have seen. It is nice for the kids to have a their party room too!
I would say working at home would be quite comfortable here!
11 Huckleberry is perfect for large scale pieces; art, or furniture, as well as fabrics and window treatments that make bold statements. This house really presents an opportunity for a fabulous design statement. Have I made my point here?
Miles is the man for the job at 11 Huckleberry. It would be Big Bold and Beautiful!

Naturally, we have our suggestions as well. An historicist at heart, Peter Pennoyer takes classic architecture to the right heights.
One of our favorites. A must have in any library for those interested in Architecture and design.
Another point of view on the traditional vernacular. Ferguson & Shamamian is the team responsible for the renovation at 15 Shagbark. One of our favorite listings of 2014.
Timeless design. If you don’t own it already, you should. I suppose the best affair you will ever have is with your house!
Tom Scheerer will make you whistle a merry merry!
For the one who likes clean lines, Victoria Hagan has an exceptional eye.
Wildly Chic. Miles’ book is A Must Have.
For all you TB fans, this book will blind you with her style and color schemes!

Jane Garmey has put together a beautiful book that will transport you to some of Connecticut’s most lovely Eden’s. For anyone who loves to garden, this is a solid addition to your library.
A good gardening library starts with the basics. I think Vita qualifies…

A stunning garden book that really does deserve the coffee table spot. It will give you incredible ideas for your own garden.
Jack Staub also has this wonderful collection to read for your kitchen garden. In addition to Exciting Vegetables, there is Remarkable Fruits and Exceptional Herbs. These are beautifully done books and make fabulous Hostess presents.

It seems like yesterday when we started working together, driving around town looking at real estate for sale, throwing opinions and thoughts around on everything from shutter construction to gravel driveways and the proper stone wall. We are “wanna be” architects, fabric designers and antique dealers. Looking for the perfect house for a customer, or working with a seller is more than the transaction for us. It’s the love of all things that go along with owning a home.
So we thought it would be a great idea to start a dialogue – a blog – to throw around and share all the ideas and thoughts we pick up out on the trail. Talking about the houses we love and the details we see that make a house someone’s home, both inside and out.
Here are some of the exciting things that happened at Real in Darien this year:
We averaged 2.5 blogs a week!!!
We ventured into Rowayton as an extension of the Darien market.
We added our consignment page for the love of great secondhand finds.
We realized quickly we live in a community filled with dynamic and extremely talented neighbors and friends. We call them our Local Lusts.
We hosted our first trunk show, featuring Sister Parish, at 593 Hollow Tree Ridge Road.
We met Miles Redd and Jeffrey Bilhuber… highlights of our year!
We have grand goals and big ideas for our second year, including more great content and exciting deals on the horizon. We also have big news to announce….stay tuned!
We are passionate about what we LOVE and we hope our blogs reflect that. Thank you for your support, your “likes” and subscriptions, and your constant encouragement. We have made a few mistakes along the way but are not afraid to to learn from them. More importantly, we will not let a few critics stop us from trying something new. We are grateful to our firm, Kelly Associates, for their support and abitlity to see the big picture in this business. We are on this ride for the long haul….enjoying every minute!

A Post Script….
Wednesday, October 3, 2012I recently referenced Gil Schafer, the architect who is on his way to being one of the GREAT American architects. There is no doubt that I am CRAZY about his work, so I thought it was worth mentioning that his book, The Great American House, is superb! If you have even the slightest interest in architecture and or design you should take a look at this book. In fact, you should probably own it. He has some great advice. He really gets it.
On sale now. Worth every page!
I managed to collect a few photos to give you a flavor of this wonderful book. Gill describes three of four projects of his and how they come together. Very inspirational!

A Stunning restoration project in South Carolina! I am dying over this!
A smashing choice of color on the walls of this fantastic hall. Makes me want to rethink everything in my house.
“Think thin” to quote Gil Schafer. One of the drastic mistakes in home designs is the width. One, possibly two rooms deep, that is it! Otherwise you run the risk of falling into the McMansion trap. (Love this entry hall).
A beautiful collection of bespoke pieces. Choose well, and choose what you love. The results will be beautiful.
